the rationality of conception

Is it rational to have a child?

Sure, this world is full of pain and short on resources.

But no better motivation exists,

when evil persists,

than that which posterity provides.

//

Perhaps we’re just traipsing planks, destination empty and cold.

But walking the plank’s a stroll, so long as there’s sun.

For despite the inevitable darkness,

the warmth of the day still feels oh so good.

//

Tiny hands in hand,

we bring them out onto the plank,

hoping they’ll hold ours too,

as we shuffle toward the unknown plunge.

//

So if the stroll is worth the fall,

and you accept the duty of swabbing the deck,

then yarr,

it’s rational to have a child.
