Built to create.
We are different from the rest of the animal kingdom. From nothing we create something. We fill empty pages with words, blank walls with murals, and silent rooms with music. Perhaps this is our natural drive, for we are the tool-making animal and there just may be a little bit of god, the creator, in us all.
Blessed with reason, humans and the authors among them, are cursed by the understanding that death punctuates the only existence they know. Whether that mark be a period, comma, semi-colon, or exclamation, will likely remain forever within the province of belief and faith.
But through art, science, and religion, we authors explore and explain this existence as we see it. We pick the words, write the sentence, and choose the punctuation. We are built to define our world and our lives, a gift we mustn’t waste.
Man, the rational animal living the finite life.
Nature has willed that Man shall produce wholly out of himself all that goes beyond the mechanical structure and arrangement of his animal existence, and that he shall participate in no other happiness or perfection but what he has procured for himself, apart from Instinct, by his own Reason. – Immanuel Kant
Makers, and the writers among them, take notice: 2013 is your year.
Enough consuming, go out and make!!
How much of your time is spent consuming things other people made (TV, music, video games, websites) versus making your own? Only one of those adds to your value as a human being.
Hone your craft. Develop your skills.
So how about this: one year. The end of 2013, that’s our deadline. Or a year from whenever you read this. While other people are telling you “Let’s make a New Year’s resolution to lose 15 pounds this year!” I’m going to say let’s
pledge to do fucking anything — add any skill, any improvement to your human tool set, and get good enough at it to impress people. Don’t ask me what — hell, pick something at random if you don’t know. Take a class in karate, or ballroom dancing, or pottery. Learn to bake. Build a birdhouse. Learn massage. Learn a programming language. Film a porno. Adopt a superhero persona and fight crime. Start a YouTube vlog.
Remember, misery is comfortable. It’s why so many people prefer it. Happiness takes effort.
